Everything is Accessible: An iPhone Photo Exhibition
Exploring the changing ideas of what can be considered professional photography, Studio 101 Gallery is hosting an exhibition of images taken solely by iPhones, instead of the usual fancy cameras. Is this a reflection of our culture of convenience? A deep desire to simplify? Or maybe just because it looks really freakin’ cool? The exhibition features work from prominent professional photographers, and opens November 13th (running through December 5th) at Studio 101 Gallery. Nick Campbell, the creator of the ShakeItPhoto iPhone App, is one of the contributing photographers.
The exhibition will be an interactive experience for those attending, with live Twitter and Facebook feeds, a photo booth for people to shoot their own pics to upload, and DJs to dance to. The world of digital photography is indeed changing. With new technology available to more people, art is becoming less intimidating and more inviting. To put it simply, camera phones make photography fun again. “I was inspired to put this show together when more and more professional photographers that I talked to were shooting with their phones – and not only enjoying it, but producing great results,” says curator Joslyn Beta Lawrence.
With professional photographers using methods as simple as an iPhone, it encourages budding artists who may have been worried that their cameras weren’t powerful or complex enough. And because the iPhone apps are available to everyone, it makes the subject and composition itself that much more important. With more accessibility comes a sense of joy that produces the best work; an expensive camera is no longer necessary to take a great picture. In a way, the iPhone could be the best thing to happen to photography since the digital revolution.
